Why turn-based RPGs still rule on phones

Why turn-based RPGs still rule on phones

October 21, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Every year someone tries to make a real-time action RPG feel great on a phone, and every year my thumbs get in the way of the action. Turn-based combat, on the other hand, was practically made for this format.

When the game pauses to let you think, you can actually appreciate what's happening. You tap a skill, you read the timeline, you plan. Ashfall Legends does this well with a clear turn order that turns each fight into a small puzzle rather than a reflex test.

The other advantage is that turn-based games respect that you might get interrupted. Someone talks to you, you put the phone down mid-battle, and nothing dies while you're gone. That reliability matters more than developers seem to think.

If you've been burned by twitchy mobile RPGs, give the slower stuff another look. It's aging far better.
